The Tea Room
National Gallery of Victoria
180 St Kilda Road
NGV is currently showcasing Monet’s Garden until September, and NGV Tea Rooms has a whimsical high tea inspired by the exhibition. At the base of the escalator leading to the Tea Rooms, a chiming acoustic soundscape by Celeste Boursier-Mougenot of floating white porcelain bowls is most entrancing, attracting young and old alike.
devonshire tea - freshly baked scones with raspberry jam & double cream
Visually the scones reminded me of the ones at Alice Nivens, and were really quite lovely but Alice Nivens was far more tender & fluffy within. Hopetoun Tea Rooms does a pretty smashing scone as well.
Though I will admit that the one thing I wanted with my scone was The Waiting Room’s divine house made strawberry jam with bites of strawberries.
hot lamb en croute // sticky date pudding // crustless sandwiches
The crustless sandwiches - egg mayo, chicken mayo and smoked salmon creme fraiche made for small dainty bites.
The sticky date pudding, made in house, was light with lashings of rich butterscotch, with a side of vanilla ice cream which I may or may not have had on my scone with jam.
