The Mess Hall
51 Bourke Street
The Mess Hall is dark and patrons dine in fairly close quarters near the back, with private rooms upstairs for large groups.
Old school water pitchers and wooden bench tops give the bare interior a slight charm.
Confit Duck served with Pea Puree, Jus & Pear Sauce ($32.5)
With the sights and tastes of Paris still lingering, the crispy duck skin and soft tender duck flesh goes perfectly with the rich sticky jus and the sweet pear sauce. The velvety pea puree made a light refreshing change from the usual potato accompaniment.
Lasagne with Spinach, Tomato, Zucchini, Pumpkin & Ricotta ($19.5)
Casoncelli, Mushroom and Ricotta with Butter, Sage Amoretti & Balsamic Reduction ($25.5)
Soft creamy layers of mascarpone cheese, separated by fragrant boozy espresso soaked sponge fingers. Each spoonful is sinfully delicious.
Vanilla Pannacotta with Poached Fruit & Coulis ($19.5)
Creme Brulee ($11.5)
If you’re after good simple Italian cuisine, the Mess Hall is the place for a simple pasta or pizza, finished off with a sweet treat. I quite enjoyed both my courses, however not all their dishes proved to be noteworthy.
