yoghurt panna cotta w kaffir lime, fresh fruit & nut cluster // toasted banana & coconut bread w rhubarb, pistachio & passionfruit labna // pulled pork, brioche, apple & celeriac remoulade

It seems we’ve been on a roll lately. The yoghurt panna cotta, gorgeously light with fantastic notes of kaffir lime, topped with fresh fruit and muesli for the feel good factor. It reminded me of the lemon tofu breakfast brulee at Industry Beans and the toasted banana bread with maple mascarpone at Friends of Mine, it’s perfect for a sweet craving early in the morning, but nothing rich and heavy. The brioche custard pudding I had at De Clieu this morning just joined the ranks.

Staying right through for lunch, the pulled pork with brioche made for thick and juicy bites but I still had visuals of the pork belly roll at sister cafe Top Paddock.

Movida Bakery

3 Tivoli Road

South Yarra

Short of flying to New York for a cronut, those delectable dossants at Movida Bakery will do just fine. Chantilly & lemon curd were our picks (poor little raspberry) for our morning pastry.

Dusted with sugar, it feels like a donut, but oh boy while it retains the satisfying slow bite you get from a donut, it’s no longer dense & thick in your mouth. It’s light, flaky layers, ridiculously more-ish. Lordy lord and cream piped down the middle. Just down the road from me, it’s going to be a serious problem.

Trocadero; Melbourne CBD.

Hamer Hall; Arts Centre

100 St Kilda Road

linguine w crab, chilli, tomato // onion tart w truffle crust // braised beef cheek w buckwheat polenta & fennel // date & apple cake w toasted almond ice cream, quince & spiced tea jelly

Situated in the Arts Centre, Trocadero does elegant Italian dining with a view of the city skyline. They offer a lunch prix fixe of two courses with wine for $39.

The linguine done aglio olio with sweet crab morsels and tomatoes, thick al dente strands. The beef cheek tender enough, but it’s that polenta that is laced with cheese that has you going back for more.

It’s the unconventional onion tart that drew us in, barely any pastry, what little is there is deliciously crisp. Encircling a soft tangle of lightly caramelised onions topped with a crumble for more texture. The soubise is rich of onions, adding a slow creaminess to finish.

The date & apple cake moist, slight bitterness from the torched quince. But the side of creamy ice cream was splendid, rich with bold notes of toasted almond. With a more-ish sticky crunchy dusting of popcorn.

tofu scramble w asian mushrooms, capscium, snow peas, wakame // mini big breakfast // mushroom crostini

Drop by for brunch but with rows of freshly baked bread, and sweet treats like that golden bombolone irresistibly dusted in sugar, you won’t be able to leave empty handed.

They kindly accommodated my request for brioche instead of the crostini, topped with mushrooms, salted ricotta shreds with hints of oregano & truffle oil. My lust for brioche compounded by that divine truffled duck egg on brioche at Hammer & Tong. We weren’t able to resist the sweets - the lemon meringue tart, with a wonderfully buttery base, was our sweet finish.

truffled duck egg on toast, parmesan & grilled asparagus // threefold quinoa salad w orange, pistachio & grilled chicken

Unlike the truffled mushroom crostini at Dench Baker, H&T’s use of the controversial truffle oil unapologetically assails your senses. The brioche is thick buttery & decadent, with that gorgeous duck egg, its yolk rich, slow and sensuous. And the sharp shavings of parmesan.

Formerly my beloved Brix, I’m just glad they haven’t changed it up, so I may remained perched on the counter, looking out into the streets on a sunny afternoon.
